Abstract: |
This Dutch-language dataset was created as part of the MA thesis "Slavernij in de Nederlandse Kaapkolonie: De onzichtbare arbeid en rol van slaafgemaakte vrouwen in het tussenstation Kaap de Goede Hoop (1652–1795)", a study of the labour and roles of enslaved women in the former Cape Colony, current-day South Africa. For this purpose, early modern court records of the Cape of Good Hope's Council of Justice that can be found in the National Archives (The Hague) were collected and used. This dataset covers 201 court cases in which a total of 307 (formerly) enslaved women were mentioned and often even given a voice. Based on this dataset and the literature found, research was conducted into the role of female slaves in the Cape Colony and the type of work they performed. The latter was done using the verb-oriented method. This method was used in an attempt to reconstruct the specific actions of the enslaved women and to nuance the labour categories that are generally used. The verb-oriented method is an analytical method that focuses on verbs to identify processes, activities and responsibilities within a system or context. By isolating verbs, you discover which actions are central and which roles, objects or resources are involved. This method is often used to clarify complex situations or systems by first looking at what exactly is being done, which helps to structure information, for example in research into the working lives of enslaved women, as used in this study. Despite the limitations of colonial sources, this research has led to new insights into the gender dimension of slavery in the former Cape Colony and the role(s) that female enslaved people had within that system. It has also enriched our knowledge of the tasks that female enslaved people performed within a household, on the plantation or in other areas of work. |
