The commodities are sourced from the Dutch East India Company (VOC) archives. Although the dataset can be used as a standalone resource, it is principally meant to be integrated into the GLOBALISE research infrastructure, to serve as reference data for the annotation of named entities, and to be used in future query expansion.

The dataset comprises 3787 concepts, of which 2294 are ‘NOT YET CLASSIFIED.’ Every concept in the dataset represents either an umbrella-category or a commodity appearing on shipping lists in the eighteenth century Indian Ocean World. It contains all instances of physical items appearing in the shipping lists of the Bookkeeper-General Batavia (https://bgb.huygens.knaw.nl/) and the Monsoon Traders Database (https://hdl.handle.net/10622/VIUUH7).

To (re)use the dataset and to know more about its scope and contents, please consult the Datasheet.

The documents in the current version of the dataset (Version 1) are dated October 2023.</dcterms:description><dcterms:subject>Arts and Humanities</dcterms:subject><dcterms:language>Dutch</dcterms:language><dcterms:language>English</dcterms:language><dcterms:language>Hindi</dcterms:language><dcterms:language>Indonesian</dcterms:language><dcterms:language>Urdu</dcterms:language><dcterms:contributor>Tosun, Merve</dcterms:contributor><dcterms:dateSubmitted>2023-10-01</dcterms:dateSubmitted><dcterms:temporal>1700</dcterms:temporal><dcterms:temporal>1800</dcterms:temporal><dcterms:temporal>2022-03</dcterms:temporal><dcterms:temporal>2023-02</dcterms:temporal><dcterms:relation>Knaap, Gerrit; Sutherland, Heather, 2019, "Monsoon Traders - 18th Century Makassar Shipping Data", https://hdl.handle.net/10622/VIUUH7, IISH Data Collection, V1</dcterms:relation><dcterms:relation>Schooneveld-Oosterling, Judith (with Gerrit Knaap, Nicolien Karskens, Dorine Smit-Maarschalkerweerd, Sander Tetteroo, Joris van den Tol, Herman Nijhuis, Koen van Wijk, Anna Kunst, Jolanda Buijs, Maarten Jongma and) Remco Boer, 2013, "Bookkeeper-General Batavia the Circulation of Commodities of the Dutch East India Company in the Eighteenth Century", https://bgb.huygens.knaw.nl/.</dcterms:relation><dcterms:source>GLOBALISE project, 2023, "VOC transcriptions - GLOBALISE", https://hdl.handle.net/10622/JCTCJ2, IISH Data Collection, V1</dcterms:source><dcterms:license>CC BY-SA 4.0</dcterms:license></metadata>
