The text was digitalised using scans provided by the John Adams Library at the Boston Public Library (Internet Archive) and the HTR software Transkribus.

The text is presented in several formats (txt, TEI/XML, ALTO line, ALTO word, Transkribus PAGE/XML), stored in separate folders. We have also included two extra plain text files, one file ('§') containing only the place name lemmas (and no introduction and appendices), the other one which was manually edited to correct a limited number of incorrect line breaks (e.g. 'New¬York' instead of 'New-York').

In the dataset 'Ground Truth' the transcriptions can be found that were manually created in order to train the Transkribus HTR model.</dcterms:description><dcterms:subject>Arts and Humanities</dcterms:subject><dcterms:subject>Gazetteer</dcterms:subject><dcterms:subject>Early Modern</dcterms:subject><dcterms:subject>North America</dcterms:subject><dcterms:subject>West Indies</dcterms:subject><dcterms:subject>South America</dcterms:subject><dcterms:subject>Latin America</dcterms:subject><dcterms:subject>Oceania</dcterms:subject><dcterms:language>English</dcterms:language><dcterms:date>1797</dcterms:date><dcterms:contributor>Stapel, Rombert</dcterms:contributor><dcterms:dateSubmitted>2020-01-31</dcterms:dateSubmitted><dcterms:temporal>1700-01-01</dcterms:temporal><dcterms:temporal>1797-12-31</dcterms:temporal><dcterms:spatial>United States</dcterms:spatial><dcterms:spatial>Canada</dcterms:spatial><dcterms:spatial>Mexico</dcterms:spatial><dcterms:spatial>Argentina</dcterms:spatial><dcterms:spatial>Brazil</dcterms:spatial><dcterms:spatial>Solomon Islands</dcterms:spatial><dcterms:spatial>Colombia</dcterms:spatial><dcterms:spatial>Chile</dcterms:spatial><dcterms:spatial>Venezuela, Bolivarian Republic of</dcterms:spatial><dcterms:spatial>Suriname</dcterms:spatial><dcterms:spatial>Greenland</dcterms:spatial><dcterms:spatial>Falkland Islands (Malvinas)</dcterms:spatial><dcterms:spatial>Guyana</dcterms:spatial><dcterms:spatial>Cuba</dcterms:spatial><dcterms:spatial>Bolivia, Plurinational State of</dcterms:spatial><dcterms:spatial>Haiti</dcterms:spatial><dcterms:spatial>Dominican Republic</dcterms:spatial><dcterms:spatial>Nicaragua</dcterms:spatial><dcterms:spatial>Peru</dcterms:spatial><dcterms:spatial>Paraguay</dcterms:spatial><dcterms:license>CC0</dcterms:license><dcterms:rights>CC0 Waiver</dcterms:rights></metadata>
